What Happened to the Ark of the Covenant?

There are many theories about what happened to the Ark of the Covenant, but they are untenable and irrelevant. The Ark and the Mercy Seat that covered it were symbolic of Christ and His finished work at the cross. The physical Ark is no longer needed, because what it represented has been fulfilled.
